Their hulls are weathered, their names painted in fading blues and whites—colors once chosen to honor La Madonna del Luime, the patron saint of local fishermen. This photograph captures more than vessels; it captures legacy. From the early 1800s, Italian immigrants brought their feluccas—slender, lateen-rigged boats—and their songs, belting operatic arias through the fog to signal their presence. Over time, the fleet evolved into Monterey Hull boats, sturdy and gasoline-powered, nicknamed ‘putt-putts’ for their rhythmic engines. Today, these boats still bring in the catch, piloted by descendants of those original seafarers. The scene is quiet, but the history hums beneath the surface.
